The other day a maintenance guy came from the heating company to fix my heater. I had slept through my alarm clock so my flatmate brought him in while I was bleary eyed and still in my pajamas. 维修人 are usually migrant workers and maybe this guy was too but he didn’t look one. He looked like a bit of a hipster tee hee hee, what with his hair cut was long on one side and shaved on the other. And he had fine facial features, but wasn’t short and scrawny like a lot of migrant workers are (something that can probably be attributed to generational malnutrition).
I thought he was pretty cute, and I very craftily asked, “Who should I call if it breaks again? Should I call you?” He said yes and was about to give me his number when my landlord cut in and said, “you call the company - and I already gave you their number.” Egads, dumb landlord was totally blind to the subtle art of flirting taking place before him.
Afterwards I told my flatmates that I thought the “fashionable 维修人” was cute, but he seemed a bit morose. They said it was probably due to the fact he had to start work at 8.30am. True. Us hipsters don’t really like mornings.
